Lane Sharing

Even with lane narrowing, it may not be possible to accommodate dedicated facilities for different travel modes within existing or proposed right-of-way.

Options to explore multi-use of designated travel lanes should be explored. For example, some lanes may be narrowed to allow widening of others to accommodate multiple travel modes.

Figure 5-3 shows a 14-foot wide lane created to accommodate bus stop areas and bicycle as well as auto travel. Narrowed through- and turn lanes provide the additional width needed to include an 11-foot minimum bus stop area and expanded parking/travel lane width.
