Caltrans Standard (Mandatory, Advisory, Good Practice)
Caltrans prefers to limit the use of ladder style crosswalks to problem locations so that they continue to stand out visually and are noticed by drivers.
Stamped and colored asphalt or concrete allowed.
Pavers not allowed
Standard thermoplastic striping at crosswalk borders required.
[Refer to California MUTCD for specific striping guidelines]
Desired Conditions Identified by Local Agencies
Ladder style crosswalks desired.
Desire to establish “pedestrian corridors” where ladder style crosswalks and signing/marking are uniformly applied to notify drivers of the special aspects of the corridor.
Caltrans' Criteria for Design Exception
No design exception required.
Justification for Design Exception or Design Modification
Refer to CA MUTCD.
History of vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians, pedestrian visibility problem or interest in creating a pedestrian-oriented district in a densely developed location.
Consider in combination with other pedestrian safety features (e.g., pedestrian refuge, curb bulbouts, in-pavement flashing lights, overhead beacons, advanced signing, off-set stop bars, etc.)
