Caltrans Standard (Mandatory, Advisory, Good Practice)
Currently there is no design standard for this.
Desired Conditions Identified by Local Agencies
Mid-block curb extension tree planters featured in parking lanes that range from 7’ to 8’ in width.
In most cases the planters are shown to extend the full width of the parking lane in other cases they are shown to extend 6’into the 8’ parking lane.
Caltrans' Criteria for Design Exception
Requires Fact Sheet Exception to Mandatory Design Standard. A minimum 4’ (or 5’ with bike lanes) clearance must be provided between the travel lane and curb.
Justification for Design Exception or Design Modification
Allows more of the sidewalk to be dedicated to pedestrian travel by placing trees (with curbed planter) in the parking lane/shoulder.
Local Agency Requirements for Caltrans Review
Collaborate with Caltrans on design exceptions during planning stages.
